Natural Hair Care Ritual: Henna, Amla, Reetha & Shikakai
The Four Pillars of Ayurvedic Hair Care
In Ayurveda, healthy hair is the result of a consistent ritual — not a single product. For centuries, Indian women have relied on four key herbs to cleanse, nourish, strengthen, and colour their hair: henna, amla, reetha, and shikakai. Used together as a weekly or bi-weekly ritual, these herbs address every aspect of hair health from scalp to tip.
Here's how each herb works and how to build your own natural hair care ritual at home.
The Four Herbs Explained
Henna (Mehndi)
Henna is a natural conditioner and colourant. It coats the hair shaft, smoothing the cuticle and adding shine. It also has antifungal properties that help maintain a healthy scalp. Used regularly, henna strengthens hair and reduces breakage.
Amla (Indian Gooseberry)
Amla is one of the richest natural sources of Vitamin C. It stimulates hair follicles, promotes growth, prevents premature greying, and deeply nourishes the scalp. It's the cornerstone of ayurvedic hair care for a reason.
Reetha (Soapnut)
Reetha is nature's shampoo. Its natural saponins create a gentle lather that cleanses the scalp and hair without stripping natural oils. It's ideal for those with sensitive scalps or anyone looking to reduce their dependence on sulphate-based shampoos.
Shikakai (Hair Fruit)
Shikakai has a naturally low pH that matches the hair's own pH, making it an exceptionally gentle cleanser. It detangles, conditions, and adds softness while promoting scalp health. Combined with reetha, it creates a complete natural hair wash system.
The Weekly Hair Ritual
Day 1: Cleanse with Reetha & Shikakai
- Mix equal parts Lushr Reetha Powder and Lushr Shikakai Powder with warm water to form a thin paste.
- Apply to wet hair and scalp, massaging gently for 2–3 minutes.
- Rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water.
- Note: The lather will be less than commercial shampoo — that's normal and a sign there are no harsh sulphates.
Day 2 or 3: Nourish with Amla
- Mix Lushr Amla Powder with warm water or coconut oil to form a paste.
- Apply to the scalp and massage well. Leave on for 30–45 minutes.
- Rinse with the reetha-shikakai wash or plain water.
Once a Month: Colour & Deep Condition with Henna
- Mix Lushr Henna Powder with warm water and let it rest for 1–2 hours.
- Apply from roots to tips and leave on for 1–3 hours.
- Rinse thoroughly. Your hair will feel noticeably softer and stronger.
